FLAGSTAFF HILL MARITIME MUSEUM & VILLAGE

Take a trip back in time to the early 1850's when Warrnambool was a busy fishing and whaling port. Flagstaff Hill will be enjoyed by all ages with recreated cobblestone roadway that winds its way through the village to the wharf where you can climb aboard sailing ships, explore treasures in the museum, experience the hardship of sailing in the theatre and take in the spectacular views from the top of the lighthouse.

OUR BEACHES

The sound of the ocean and spectacular coastline scenery are a feature of Warrnambool that you will never forget. Lady Bay is the main swimming beach where you can relax on the beach, surf, sail and have fun. A boardwalk winds its way from the breakwater through the sandhills overlooking the beach. You can stop for a coffee and take in the views of the fishing fleet moored at the breakwater or you might like to do a spot of fishing.

Thunder Point, Penguin Island, Shelly Beach and Logans Beach are all very popular and each provides a different outlook that will be enjoyed by all.


LAKE PERTOBE ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND

You can spend hours enjoying the tranquil surrounds at one of Warrnambool's most popular recreational spots. Lake Pertobe Adventure Playground is ideal for a picnic with acres of lawn area, playground equipment, a maze, flying fox and lake. Take a ride on the paddle boats or a relaxing canoe ride taking in the the birdlife who make the lake's many islands their home. Lake Pertobe also offers a walking track around the lake itself where many of the birdlife can be viewed from specially placed 'bird hides' around the lakes edge. During the summer period a carnival operates nightly just opposite the lake area with amusement rides and side shows.


LOGANS BEACH WHALE NURSERY

One of Australia's most popular whale watching areas. The annual return of the Southern Right Whales have Logans Beach buzzing during the months from mid June to late September as the beach area becomes a whale nursery. Southern Right Whale mothers and their young thrill watchers as they frolic only metres from shore and visitors are provided with a specially constructed whale viewing platform and interpretive centre. Southern Right Whales have been visiting the warmer waters around southern Australia for hundreds of years where they were hunted to near extinction, but since whaling was outlawed in 1935, numbers have been slowly increasing. If you have not been to see the whales, then plan your next holiday now, it's a sight and experience that will thrill.

TOWER HILL WILDLIFE RESERVE

Just a short drive from Warrnambool is Tower Hill State Game Reserve. Victoria's last active volcano is home to abundant wildlife and features walking tracks, picnic area and interpretive centre. Koalas, Kangaroos, Emus and many species of waterbirds roam freely in the natural surrounds so make sure you have a camera and plenty of film when you visit. Tower Hill is believed to have been formed some 25,000 years ago where eruptions created the funnel shaped crater that is now filled by a lake and islands. Since 1961 an extensive revegetation program has taken place with over 300,000 trees being planted. On the face of the crater is the historic township of Koroit with antique and craft shops that are well worth a visit.


SHOPPING DELIGHT

Warrnambool is the south west's largest centre and shopping is really a delight. The City Centre offers national chain and boutique shopping where you are sure to pick up a bargain or something special to remember your visit to Warrnambool. Gateway Plaza Shopping Centre is five minutes from the City centre and offers undercover specialty store shopping including KMart and nearby Homemaker Centre and the Bunnings complex. The City is especially renowned for its restaurants, cafes and entertainment venues. You are certainly well catered for with variety, quality and friendly service.

Enjoy a hearty cooked breakfast or gourmet lunch, coffee and cake in one of the many sidewalk cafes and of course you are well catered for with take-away seafood, burgers, pizzas, pasta, chicken and asian food.


HISTORY

Warrnambool is steeped in history where a major maritime focus is derived from the many shipwrecks that rest on the seabed along the Shipwreck Coast. Links with the past have been maintained with many restored buildings in and around the City and along the river banks where Warrnambool derived its aboriginal name meaning 'resting place between two rivers'.

The local historical society provides walking trail maps around the City where buildings with significant links to the past are highlighted and explanations of their history provided.
