SOUTHERN RIGHT WHALES
WHALE NURSERY
Warrnambool's whale nursery is annually transformed into a very busy Southern Right Whale nursery.

The baby whales are generally born between July and September and measure around five metres and weigh a tonne on arrival. The mothers and calf keep whale watchers entertained with their activities of fin and tail slapping. The proud mums regularly put on their own show with regular whale rolls, proposing, lunging and lobtailing.

OUR FAVOURITE WHALE, WILMA!
Warrnambool's most popular whale. Wilma is easily recognisable by her
somwhat modified tail fluke which may have been bitten off by a shark or injured
by a ships rudder. This year we have named two new whales who have calved,
Big Lips and Lots of Dots. Both have been identified by their distinctive markings
so that they can be monitored if they return in the coming years.
From the whale viewing platform (picture below) people are treated to a wonderful
site of the whales swimming close to the shore and it is really a wonderful
experience to see these magnificent giants of the deep up so close.
